I’m Kate Gaul. I make theatre, write things, produce things, direct things and watch a frankly unreasonable amount of theatre.
I’ve been doing this for a long time — in rehearsal rooms, backstage, at festivals, in boardrooms, on planes, in regional towns and in the back row of theatres wondering why someone thought that was a good idea.
Disrupting Stages is where I get to talk about it.
I’m interested in theatre that takes a risk. Theatre that gets under your skin. Theatre that makes you laugh when you probably shouldn’t, leaves you slightly bewildered, breaks something open, or has you arguing about it on the walk home.
I like beautiful theatre. I like ugly theatre. I like theatre that is clever without showing off and theatre that completely loses the plot but somehow gets away with it.
I’m less interested in whether a show is important than whether it actually does something.
This is not an industry newsletter. It’s not a PR department. And despite appearances, I don't have a spreadsheet ranking every production I’ve ever seen.
It’s a place for reviews, conversations, discoveries and provocations — a space to celebrate artists doing extraordinary things, interrogate the things that don’t quite land, and occasionally ask: What the hell was that?
Because theatre is supposed to make something happen.
On stage.
In your head.
In your gut.
Preferably all three.
Come on in.
